The Department for Irregular Services
A downloadable game
Ancient monuments can attract beings from the Hidden World. To protect both those beings and the general public (not to mention employees), the Office of Works established the Department for Irregular Services (DfIS) in 1703. The department is now part of Historic England.
The DfIS deals with boggarts, ghost realms, fae, trolls and more. A Footpath Closed sign might indicate a footpath needing repair, or it might be to avoid disturbing a sleeping troll.
Currently led by Bernard McTavish, the group comprises a team of six based in a haunted office in Marlborough, Wiltshire. The team consists of McTavish, Hester Babbage (an archivist) and what McTavish describes optimistically as four roving “field agents” (the PCs): Dr Cassandra Blackwood (occult history), Titus Stone (paranormal engineering and protective wards), Grey Calderwell (fae expert), and Erik Grimsson (cryptozoology).
