Updated romance rules

Hi,

Over on my blog, I've  posted my updated romance rules. I changed these after playing West End Lullaby, earlier this year. The rules are now simplified and easier to use - always a bonus. If (when?)   I create a second edition of Writing Freeform Larps, I'll use these rules instead.

A second edition of Writing Freeform Larps will also include the Pardners mechanic, which   I talk about here.

Cheers,

steve

Hi Steve,

Thanks for updating. I always like reading your guides and advice for writing.

I was involved in some of the earlier discussions at Lullaby and one of the reasons for widening the heart mechanic definition from just romance was to better accommodate ace/aro identities and allow other types of committed lifelong partnerships such as QPPs (Queer Platonic Partnerships).

I think you're correct about it not necessarily needing to accommodate all kinds of relationships, but I'd love to have a conversation some time about simple ways to adapt your mechanic to include those kinds of relationships?

Best wishes

Rei

Hi Rei,

Always happy to have that sort of conversation!

Am I right in thinking that the difference between QPPs and romantic partnerships  is that QPPs (and platonic relationships generally) don't include physical intimacy? But are they otherwise similar ?

If so, it may be just a matter of terminology. Call the rules "Falling in love" and change references to   "romance tasks " to "heart tasks"?

If so (and I welcome your feedback), I would change the first couple of paragraphs to:

Falling in love

These are the optional rules for falling in love, whether romantically or platonically.

Setup

First, decide whether you want your character to fall in love and how flexible you want to be. Get a pen/sticker from the GM desk and mark your name badge as follows:

  • No heart: I don't want to fall in love.
  • Black heart: I want to fall in love (heterosexual).
  • Pink heart: I want to fall in love (queer).
  • Gold heart: I want to fall in love (any).

If you don't want to fall in love, you need to read no further.

And so on...

As an alternative, in Tombstone, we created "Pardner" rules, which are effectively platonic relationships.

Let me know  .

steve

I've now updated the post on my blog. Happy to revise it again if I've misunderstood.
